"Our" ABC again defies its charter to be accurate, impartial, fair and balanced.

Long term readers of this blog may remember when we reported that the ABC defied their then chairman Maurice Newman. (See True Lies and Misinformation)
ABC went against their chairman Maurice Newman. Newman said that they should be even-handed on reporting of the global warming debate (link) but the ABC journalists should be called activists because they revolted and went against the ABC's charter and their chairman's wishes

Mr Newman was criticised by Christopher Warren, the Federal Secretary of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance in a letter the next day:

I was concerned to read yesterday the remarks made by ABC chairman, Maurice Newman, to a gathering of journalists, program-makers and management on Wednesday.
Since his speech I have been contacted by a number of Media Alliance members from the ABC’s news and current affairs team who have interpreted Mr Newman’s remarks as an attempt to influence the ABC’s line on climate change.
Yes, in defiance of their charter, the ABC took their
ABC’s line on climate change.
In the Australian today, Mr Newman again calls out the ABC for inaccurate reporting:

Climate propaganda parades as science on your leftist ABC

In a Four Corners program presented by ABC journalist Michael Brissenden titled Weather Report, as Mr Newman says: "which was entirely devoted to global-warming advocacy masquerading as science."

Some of the inaccuracies:

  1. Brown Brothers planned to move part of its operations to cooler country;
  2. Blatant perpetuation of a false Bureau of Meteorology hottest day Penrith announcement;
  3. Warming in southwest Western Australia had “happened faster than anywhere else on the planet"
1: Brown Brothers Wines:
.....retiree Bob Fernley-Jones wrote to Brown Brothers and found: “At this stage we don’t intend on selling any vineyards in Victoria. We have always had the philosophy that we grow the right varietals in the most suited climate …”
2: Penrith Hottest day:
Perhaps none was worse than the blatant perpetuation of a false Bureau of Meteorology announcement that at Penrith on January 7, the Sydney Basin recorded its hottest day. The bureau, with lightning speed, corrected the record to acknowledge Richmond in 1939, but the ABC chose to ignore the correction.
See also Jennifer Marohasy post: BoM Blast for Dubious Record Hot Day

3: Warming in southwest Western Australia:
Viewers were told that warming in southwest Western Australia had “happened faster than anywhere else on the planet”, without mentioning the region had just recorded one of its coldest summers in two decades.
Mr Newman reports:
It beggars belief that any broadcasting organisation could put such biased rubbish to air. But unforced corrections or apologies are not in today’s ABC’s DNA.
And again, Maurice Newman reports on how "our" ABC treats complaints:
Fernley-Jones lodged five complaints about Weather Alert. All he achieved was a rebuke. “Our records indicate that to date you have lodged five complaints via our webform regarding the edition of Four Corners 5 March. In future should you wish to lodge a complaint about a program please set out your entire complaint in one submission … Kieran Doyle wrote to you on 12 April acknowledging your emails and attachments … The email advised you your complaint would not be investigated by Audience and Consumer Affairs. This advice relates to all of the complaints you have submitted.”
"Our" ABC told Mr  Fernley-Jones that, because you issued FIVE complaints when you should have only issued ONE, we are going to dismiss them.

"Our" ABC is a public body that should answer the public's complaints. To dismiss them is an outrage. Surely, as "our" representatives, parliament should force the ABC to answer all complaints.

I suggest all readers should write to their local member and ask them to make the ABC respect and follow its charter. The ABC's charter was changed last year: (link)

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield has yielded to some of
Pauline Nation's demands on the ABC.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation Amendment (Fair and Balanced) Bill 2017 will put into action some of the demands made by Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party, and agreed during media law reform negotiations to get the minor party onside.
The proposals include the additions of the words ‘fair and balanced’ to the ABC Charter, which will complement the existing requirement that the national broadcaster should be ‘accurate and impartial according to the recognised standards of objective journalism’.
How fair and balanced was it for "our", or is it "their," ABC to broadcast the inaccuracies detailed above?

How fair and balanced was it for "our", or is it "their," ABC to dismiss Mr Fernley-Jones' complaints because he made FIVE instead of one.

"THEIR" ABC is out of control.

Should the Turnbull government cut the apron strings and let "THEIR" ABC stand alone?

The IPA (this blogger is an IPA member) thinks so.

New IPA book calls on government to privatise the ABC by 'giving it away'

Against Public Broadcasting, released on Friday night, labels the ABC "an anachronism" whose rationale is now redundant and which has become a $1 billion-a-year drain on the public purse.
Communications Minister Mitch Fifield, who has close links with and remains a member of the IPA - a conservative think-tank - quickly distanced himself from the publication and said the ABC would remain in public hands.
Against Public Broadcasting authors -Dr Berg and Professor Davidson - say the ABC "should be given away to Australian citizens or group of citizens on some pro-rata basis - equal shares per head, or share of income tax paid, or welfare benefits consumed, or any other formula deemed equitable and politically palatable".
To this proposal, Communications Minister Mitch Fifield said that the government:
"has no plans to change the ownership of the ABC" but had "a significant agenda to enhance the accountability, transparency and efficiency" of the broadcaster.

Let us earnestly and sincerely hope and pray that Mitch Fifield 's plans to enhance the accountability, transparency and efficiency of the broadcaster return the ABC to accountablilty and accuracy of reporting.
I expect there will be no change to "THEIR" ABC!!

Significant work that contradicts the claims of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

Hollow Models?
The long writing career of British logician and philosopher Bertrand Russell covered a period of marked change in science. The term natural philosophy was giving way to the term physical science and extensive divisions were occurring into branches such as physics, chemistry, etc. Already, it had been shown that long-held beliefs needed continuing empirical verification. For example, European philosophers long held the view that knowledge can be logically deduced from generally held beliefs, or propositions, such as: all swans are white; if it is a swan, it is white. This logical view was broken when the premise was falsified with the discovery of black swans in Australia in 1697. The occurrence has been used to demonstrate that logic alone is not sufficient to demonstrate a proposition has meaning in the physical world (truth). [Stock market investor Nassim Nicholas Taleb developed an investment (speculation) strategy based on unlikely events, which has different meaning.]

Previously, it was held that mathematics, the language of science, conveys empirical meaning. Euclidian geometry fit well with Newtonian Mechanics. However, Brownian Motion, discovered in 1827, did not. Further, Quantum Mechanics, advanced at the beginning of the 20th century by Max Planck, Einstein, and others, does not fit into a Euclidian scheme. Mathematics alone is not sufficient to advance knowledge, meaning, of the physical world. Empirical verification is necessary.

Recently, we have seen significant work that contradicts the claims of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and others, that carbon dioxide is causing dangerous global warming. As John Christy, Roy Spencer, and others with the Earth System Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville have published, the bulk atmosphere is not warming as projected by a multitude of models used by the IPCC. Using the Canadian Climate Model Run 3, as an example, they show that the incorrectly termed “distinct human fingerprint”, the tropical “hot spot” between about 20ºN and 20ºS, does not exist in 38 years of atmospheric temperature data.

In its latest Assessment Report (AR5, 2013 & 2014), the IPCC no longer claims a tropical hot spot, but such a condition is necessary if water vapor is to amplify the slight warming produced by an increase in carbon dioxide (CO2) shown in laboratory experiments, as speculated in the 1979 Charney Report, published by the National Academy of Sciences. Thus, the IPCC and its followers such as the US Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), with 13 US government participating agencies, are in a difficult situation. They have no empirical basis for declaring that greenhouse gases, particularly CO2, are causing dangerous global warming.

Over one hundred years ago, it was shown that mathematics and logic, alone, are not sufficient for establishing meaningful knowledge about the physical world. Reliance on mathematical models, without empirical verification, is an empty science. The global climate models being used are hollow.

Hon. Tony Abbott MP, Member for Warringah, NSW
Tony Abbott has been the Member for Warringah in the House of Representatives since 1994.

In 2013 he was elected Prime Minister and served for two years. In this time his Government repealed the carbon and resource rent taxes; finalised bilateral trade agreements with China, Japan and Korea; and halted people smuggling to Australia.

Mr Abbott was Opposition Leader from 2009 to 2013.
From 1996 to 2007 he was a member of the Howard Government and held positions of parliamentary secretary, minister, and Leader of the House of Representatives. He variously served as Minister for Health, Workplace Relations, and Employment Services.

Before entering Parliament, Mr Abbott was a journalist with The Australian, a senior adviser to Opposition Leader, John Hewson, and Director of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy.

He has economics and law degrees from the University of Sydney and an MA from Oxford which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar.  He is the author of three books.

Since 1998 Mr Abbott has convened an annual bike ride that has raised more than $4 million for medical research, indigenous health scholarships and Carers Australia. He does surf patrols with the Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club and is a former deputy captain in the Davidson Rural Fire Brigade.
Professor Robert (Bob) Carter 1942-2016
Bob Carter was born in England and grew up in New Zealand.

After graduating with a BSc in geology from Otago and a PhD from Cambridge, Bob taught at Otago and then James Cook University (JCU), where he was a Professor and Head of Earth Sciences for 17 years.

This was followed by appointments as an adjunct research professor at the JCU Marine Geophysical Laboratory, then as a visiting research professor at the University of Adelaide.
Bob's published research is diverse.  It encompasses palaeontology, palaeoecology and paleoclimatology, as well as the Great Barrier Reef and sea-level and climate change.

As a consequence, Bob became one of the world’s leading authorities on the science of climate change and a staunch critic of poor science and of public policy based on poor science.

Bob helped found the NZ Climate Science Coalition and served as a scientific advisor to think tanks around the world on climate change. They included the Institute of Public Affairs (Australia), the Heartland Institute (US), the Science and Public Policy Institute (US), and the International Climate Science Coalition.

At the time of his death Bob was a long-serving Director of AEF and its Scientific Adviser.

Our present-day NOT abrupt climate change.

or how I learned that the alarmists are the true science deniers.

--> Mountain Avens aka Dryas Octopetala

This is a Mountain Avens aka Dryas Octopetala. Dryas from the Greek for Oak drus and octopatala or eight petals. (Mountain Avens is given some measure of protection in Northern Ireland under the Wildlife (NI) Order, 1985. LINK)

Dryas Octopetala flourishes in cold conditions, As NOAA’s NCDC write:
The Younger Dryas is one of the most well-known examples of abrupt change. About 14,500 years ago, Earth's climate began to shift from a cold glacial world to a warmer interglacial state. Partway through this transition, temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere suddenly returned to near-glacial conditions. This near-glacial period is called the Younger Dryas, named after a flower (Dryas octopetala) that grows in cold conditions and that became common in Europe during this time. The end of the Younger Dryas, about 11,500 years ago, was particularly abrupt. In Greenland, temperatures rose 10°C (18°F) in a decade (Alley 2000(bold added)
As the world slid into and out of the last ice age, the general cooling and warming trends were punctuated by abrupt changes. Climate shifts up to half as large as the entire difference between ice age and modern conditions occurred over hemispheric or broader regions in mere years to decades. Such abrupt changes have been absent during the few key millennia when agriculture and industry have arisen. The speed, size, and extent of these abrupt changes required a reappraisal of climate stability. (bold added)

The Cool Period known as the Younger Dryas was from ~12900-11,500BP. At the beginning of the period, temperatures dropped around 8ºC in less than 100 years and possibly only a decade.

On WUWT, Don Easterbrook writes:
The Younger Dryas is the longest and coldest of several very abrupt climatic changes that took place near the end of the late Pleistocene. Among these abrupt changes in climate were:

  1.  - sudden global warming 14,500 years ago (Fig. 1) that sent the immense Pleistocene ice sheets into rapid retreat,
  2. - several episodes of climatic warming and cooling between ~14,400 and 12,800 years ago,
  3. - sudden cooling 12,800 years ago at the beginning of the Younger Dryas, and
  4.  ~11,500 years ago, abrupt climatic warming of up to 10º C in just a few decades. (Link WUWT) (bold added)

Note - abrupt climatic warming of up to 10º C in just a few decades.

Professor Ian Plimer says that the warming change was even greater:
After this 1300 year period of intense cold, global temperatures rose very rapidly by about 12°C marking the end of the Younger Dryas cold period and the end of the latest glaciation. (How to get expelled from school = Connor Court )

Ten Degrees? 12 degrees? What really matters is that there was rapid warming.

Now that is climate change? What caused it? Obviously, it was Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble screaming around bedrock in their SUV.

The Earth has warmed since the Little Ice Age. NASA's Earth Observatory has told us (Link)
But the global temperature mainly depends on how much energy the planet receives from the Sun and how much it radiates back into space—quantities that change very little. ........In the past, a one- to two-degree drop was all it took to plunge the Earth into the Little Ice Age.

And NASA also tells us:
According to an ongoing temperature analysis conducted by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), the average global temperature on Earth has increased by about 0.8° Celsius (1.4° Fahrenheit) since 1880.
So there you have it, straight from the's mouth; less than a rise of one dgreee since the frightful cold of the little ice age. Saved the world from severe cold. The warming has been beneficial and, definitely not abrupt.

Why are the alarmists, those deniers of true science, trying to scare us?
