SS's Myth Creator John Cook

Skeptical Science (SS) is a disinformation site which more correctly should be labelled UNSkeptical UNScience.

It is run by a cartoonist John Cook who likes to dress in SS costume. The image above was on the SS site but has since been removed. One of his cartoons here (link)

And Popular Science's "
The Truth about Skeptical Science" tells us:
A link from the Skeptical Science "About" page originally went to his cartoonist page,
"John Cook: A cartoonist working from home in Brisbane, Australia

               John Cook
A cartoonist working from home in Brisbane, Australia, John is currently juggling the tasks of taking care of his daughter Gaby, drawing new Sev Space cartoons, casino online, continually developing and programming the Sev Wide Web, developing a new cartoon series Terrible Twos, posting regular updates in his cricket blog as well as obsession about past and future Ashes series, dabbling in screenwriting, programming for PaperWeb Design and consequently getting nothing done!

Previous about on SS: (link)

This site was created by John Cook. I'm not a climatologist or a scientist but a self employed cartoonist and web programmer by trade. I did a Physics degree at the University of Queensland and while I achieved First Class Honours and could've continued onto a PhD, I instead quit academia and became a professional scrawler. Too much doodling in lectures, I think. Nevertheless, I've pursued a keen interest in science and if anything, found my curiosity about how the world works increased once I wasn't forced to study for impending exams.
An example of Cook's Work was:

Quantifying the consensus on anthropogenic global warming in the scientific literature (link)

 From the abstract:
We analyze the evolution of the scientific consensus on anthropogenic global warming (AGW) in the peer-reviewed scientific literature, .......... Among abstracts expressing a position on AGW, 97.1% endorsed the consensus position that humans are causing global warming.
However a paper by Legates et al found: (link)
inspection of a claim by Cook et al. (Environ Res Lett 8:024024, 2013) of 97.1 % consensus, heavily relied upon by Bedford and Cook, shows just 0.3 % endorsement of the standard definition of consensus: that most warming since 1950 is anthropogenic.
Whooops! Slight error, Reichsführer- 97.1% found to be 0.3%.

And yet Reichsführer Cook is the man that the University of Queensland put in charge of a course that "uncovers why the topic of climate change is so controversial, exploding a number of climate myths along the way."

ON UNSkeptical UNScience, Cook et al have a page titled
Global Warming and Climate Change Myths
This is a scrappy crappy page and all the "Myths" are easily debunked.

"Climate's changed before" Climate reacts to whatever forces it to change at the time; humans are now the dominant forcing.

This SS "myth's" answer has been debunked
Here -

UNSkeptical UNScience's Manufactured Myths.

SS's No. 4 "Myth" is
"There is no consensus"

As has been shown above, Cook et al's 97% consensus paper has been shown to be very flawed.

Friends of Science site has debunked a whole range of other "Myths" on their page headed:

  • MYTH 1:  Global temperatures are rising at a rapid, unprecedented rate.
  • MYTH 2:  The "hockey stick" graph proves that the earth has experienced a steady, very gradual temperature decrease for 1000 years, then recently began a sudden increase.
  • MYTH 3:  Human produced carbon dioxide has increased over the last 100 years, adding to the Greenhouse effect, thus causing most of the earth's warming of the last 100 years.
  • MYTH 4:  CO2 is the most common greenhouse gas.
  • MYTH 5:  Computer models verify that CO2 increases will cause significant global warming.
  • MYTH 6:  The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has proven that man–made CO2 causes global warming.
  • MYTH 7:  CO2 is a pollutant.
  • MYTH 8: Global warming will cause more storms and other weather extremes.
  • MYTH 9:  Receding glaciers and the calving of ice shelves are proof of global warming.
  • MYTH 10:  The earth’s poles are warming; polar ice caps are breaking up and melting and the sea level rising.
All debunked.

More on the SS "Myths" to follow on this blog.

CO2, whether man-made or not, does not 'drive' the climate system.

Author of the seminal book on climate: "Physics of the Atmosphere & Climate," Professor Murry Salby is without doubt one of the best Climate Scientists on the planet.

In a lecture in London on the 17th March, 2015, he reveals new work which shows that;
  1. The climate sensitivity is below 0.2c - confirmed by 3 independent methods.
  2. Most of the observed increase in atmospheric CO2 is not anthropogenic.
  3. CO2 movements and concentrations are largely determined by nature, not man; consequently, any cuts we make to our CO2 emissions will not have the desired effect, and are a costly waste of time.
  4. CO2, whether man-made or not, does not 'drive' the climate system.

Professor Murry Salby has been vilified by enviro-alarmists and the left for his scientific results. Salby was disenfranchised and exiled from academia in Australia for daring to speak such “sacrilege.(see Graphic)

In a case similar to many others we have seen in Australia, and across the west, he was the subject of University hate and was finally sacked while he was on a lecture tour in Europe; his employer, Macquarie University of NSW, sacking him from his position as Professor of Climate Science. The University board cancelled his return ticket home, stranding him in Paris. All Salby's work was confiscated and has still not been returned to him.
(See this blog - Murry Salby and Mac Uni and Mac Uni's reply)

The pursuit of genuine Science in the field of climate - and free speech are Dead in most Western Universities:
Other cases where top scientists were vilified and sacked or demoted by a University for the results of their science or for their views on the climate include:
Bob Carter, Murry Salby Lennart Bengtsson, David Legates, George Taylor, Caleb Rossiter, Bjorn Lomborg, Henk Tennekes, Askel Winn-Nielsen, Alfonso Sutera, Anonio Speranza and scores of others.

    Forecasting the Future

by IPCC Expert Reviewer Dr Vincent Gray

    JUNE 24th 2015

My latest book with the above title is now available free on the website of that name at

However, if you try to put the title in Google you will be told it is forbidden.

So you had better read it now before they have found a way to suppress it altogether. If you have any trouble I am happy to supply a draft copy by Email one Chapter at a time, or by dropbox.

The book is currently being considered for publication

Forecasting is difficult particularly about the future. This saying is variously ascribed to Mark Twain, Neils Bohr, Zhou Enlai, Yogi Bear and the US baseball player Yogi Berra.

Genuine climate scientists make genuine weather forecasts which contain genuine estimates of their reliability.

Their origin is told in a recent book by Peter Moore: The Weather Experiment .

The originator was Robert Fitzroy, former Governor of New Zealand and an outstanding mariner. Although he had no formal scientific training he established the basic scientific principles which apply today. He committed suicide when he was convinced he had failed but his ideas survived after all.

Climate Change pseudo scientists do not make forecasts. They make projections -none of which have ever been successful. They try to claim that they can make backforecasting but this has also failed completely since the globe is no longer warming, the ice is no longer melting and the sea level is not rising.

This does not stop environmental activists, politicians, United Nations officials Government leaders and even popes claiming the most extreme of the IPCC projections will undoubtedly happen unless we destroy our current energy supply arrangements.

These Forecasts do not include any information about the sort of world that is likely to arise if they happen. The recent meeting of G7 leaders thought that the whole world would be decarbonised by the end of the century, but none would say what it would be like without power stations, cars,or home heating.

Since it is no longer possible to dispute the results of pseudoscience business people are already ignoring them completely.

For example the BP Review of World Energy 2015 has now been published at and Energy-economics/statistical-review-2015/bp-statistical-review-of-world-energy-2015-full-report.pdf

They have also provided a foredast of energy usage up to 2035 at

Their forecasts might be considered surprising. Here are some examples:

So the Chinese will rescue the world by using coal that the others try to stop using.

You would think that the economists who support the Global Warming theory would be busy trying to assess the economic damage it has already done and try to scare us with what we may expect. But no, it seems they are following BP and getting real instead.

The first example cones from a publication of the Victoria University of Wellington School of Government, Policy Quarterly. This excellent publication is available free and can be downloaded from their website at

The magazine often has articles supporting the climate change doctrine, including a special number. The February number is different as it features income inequality and has a fine article by Geoff Bertram who is a climate change supporter, but this time on how the claim of global income inequality by Thomas Piketty applies to New Zealand. Brian Easton shows that it is because the previous Labour Government lowered taxes on the rich. Other articles are on gender inequality and the poverty trap of solo mothers.

The current (May) issue on Global Development in the Twenty-first Century is even more impressive. The key article is by Ross Garnaut who is notorious in Australia as the author of a key survey of climate change for Kevin Rudd in 2011.

Although he pays lip service to this he ignores it completely with a monumental survey of current economic trends. Here are some of his graphs:

He shows that that world economies have applied a super Keynesian policy of printing money and low interest rates to recover from the 2009 bank meltdown. This policy has worked, but only if it is ultimately rescued by future technology, The rescue has partially happened in the US with fracking.

They are now an oil exporter instead of an importer. But their debt has escalated and the ordinary people are worse off. Many who lost their homes are now in trailer parks. House prices and stocks have escalated. The US Federal Reserve is already planning return to sensible interest rates when New Zealand is planning to go down even further.

Obama is making token pretence on climate change to encourage the Europeans to founder. Their banks are faced with paying out ever more printed money to baijlots where the likelihood of repayment is zero.

Garnaut dismisses the population explosion by plotting only fertility in developed countries, he argues that they will revert downwards in Africa when they become prosperous. In the meantime, we must endure the refugee crisis.

In the same issue Geoff Bertram puts in further support for Piketty.

Then, on top of all this we have another reformed global warmer, none other than Gareth Morgan who has an economics article in the New Zealand Listener June 27-July 3rd.

He tells a very similar story to Garnaut. He is more forthright and he emphasizes several New Zealand mistakes, such as the over emphasis of investment in property instead of
in profitable enterprise. He even ventures forecasts which ignore any consideration of cutting carbon emissions.

All the economists agree that the system is about to break down. Could the European banks really afford to throw yet more money at Greece, Ukraine, who else? Piketty expects a revolution. We all sit and wait while the climate crisis becomes more and more irrelevant.

Global warming causing hot dogs to slip out of buns

For a long time there has been a list of "Things Caused by Global Warming." (link)
The lists keeps growing and, as the December Paris UNFCCC Cop21 approaches, you can be sure of the Shrill adding a few more doozies to supplement the list.

    Some crazy additions have been
    • early marriage: "CLIMATE change has been blamed for increasing social problems such as early marriages, a report has stated."
    • Cataractspeople around the world are in greater danger of losing their vision because of climate change.
    • Old Women become ProstitutesThe effects of climate change have driven women in communities in coastal areas in poor countries like the Philippines into dangerous work, and sometimes even the flesh trade, a United Nations official said.
    • Taller Mountains: The European Alps have been growing - the rate of uplift has accelerated in recent decades because global warming has sped up
    • End Olympic GamesTokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara warned  the 2016 Olympics could be the last Games, with global warming an immediate threat to mankind.
    • Ice Sheet GrowthGlobal Warming May Trigger Ice Sheet Growth
    • Ice Sheet shrinkageScientists have worried that the Antarctic ice sheet was shrinking
    • Sex ChangeCould a sex change, caused by rising temperatures, cause the end of the prehistoric Tuatara?
Much more of this foolishness at Number Watch.

The latest idiocy from the Shrill is Bread will be smaller in future.  Really?  Surely, if the baker uses lust a little more dough the loaf won' t get smaller.

But wait! What causes bread to rise?   Why it's our old friend, vital-to-life carbon dioxide (CO2).

    From Bake Info
The Carbon dioxide produced by these reactions causes the dough to rise
See this 2 minute youTube: Then read below

American Thinker has a great piece - Global warming causing hot dogs to slip out of buns
We know that global warming is a big threat.  Oh, it may help us with our mummy problem, and be a boon for great tits, but it causes more problems than it solves – shrinking horses, causing seals to be oversexed, causing poison ivy to become even itchier, making trees less colorful,  making trees more colorful, making reptiles walk uphill, destroying opium in Afghanistan, and even increasing cannibalism to unacceptable levels, with that last prediction courtesy of former CNN founder and exotic diner Ted Turner.
And now it turns out that global warming is causing a new problem: it is shrinking the size of our buns
The implications for this are manifold.  With smaller bread, buns will be smaller, and hot dogs will slip out of buns.  Salsa dripping from smaller tacos and burritos will create slip and fall hazards, and predictably, areas with undocumented migrants will be hardest hit.  And what are we going to do when sandwiches become more wich than sand?

    Green Climate Fraud

Douglas Casey, a classmate of Bill Clinton at Georgetown University, has been quoted as saying:
Foreign aid might be defined as a transfer of money from poor people in rich countries to rich people in poor countries. (link)
The supposed aim of the shrill in pushing the catastrophic climate change (CAGW) hoax is to transfer money from rich countries to poor countries via the Green Climate Fund:
The Fund will contribute to the achievement of the ultimate objective of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In the context of sustainable development, the Fund will promote the paradigm shift towards low-emission and climate-resilient development pathways by providing support to developing countries to limit or reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and to adapt to the impacts of climate change, taking into account the needs of those developing countries particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change. The Fund will be guided by the principles and provisions of the Convention.
Many countries have indicated that they are on board with the fraud:

    •  President Obama announced on Saturday that the United States will contribute $3 billion to a new international fund intended to help the world’s poorest countries address the effects of climate change. (link)
    • The (Australian) Federal Government has announced it will contribute $200 million to an international fund designed to help developing nations tackle climate change. Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced the funding at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru. (link) (Source)

The recent Bonn climate talks, however, were a failure: (link)
The latest round of UN climate talks have made slow progress on refining a negotiating text for the Paris summit in December, the focal point for efforts to agree curbs on greenhouse gas emissions in developed and developing countries.
Despite two weeks of talks at an interim meeting in the German city of Bonn, most of the contradictory proposals that littered the previous 90-page document remain, meaning that the next few rounds of talks in August and October will have to shoulder the burden of distilling a negotiating text by December.
And what of the evil carbon (dioxide). Make no mistake they mean carbon dioxide even though they use the deceptive - carbon. To do this is the same as calling water (H2O)  - oxygen. Anyone for a glass of oxygen?

There is no evidence that CO2 is causing runaway global warming. There is no correlation between global temperature and atmospheric CO2. In fact, atmospheric CO2 keeps rising yet there has been no warming of the atmosphere for ~20 years.

Pope's Encyclical is an Immense Pile of Filth

Alex Epstein wrote the book, The Moral case for Fossil Fuels, reviewed HERE

Ezra Levant was pleased to be able to interview him for at this year's IdeaCity in Toronto.

Epstein is with the Center for Intellectual Progress, where he works to get the facts out about the oil and gas industry. He and Ezra talk about the Pope's environmental encyclical. Epstein says that if the pope from 300 years ago could see our world today, he'd say it was actually cleaner and healthier than his own era.

Epstein quotes a tweet by the pope:
The Earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth.
    Pope's Tweet

    Alex Epstein retorts:
"the Pope’s encyclical is an immense pile of filth."

Epstein and  Levant agree that the communists liked industry, liked factories but said they wanted to own the factories, whilst today’s progressives don’t want the factories. The Shrill want to go back to living in a pre-industrial era.

    See video of interview below.

Editor's Note: Perhaps the Shrill and the Pope would prefer going from Horse Power, back to the Horse and have the world, like it was in 1898, drowning in horse manure.

    Vale Alan Caruba

We have just received some sad news. Alan Caruba, creator of a blog called Warning Signs, passed away on June 15th. He was in his 77th year. He was active until the end, his last column being published on "Warning Signs" on June 11.

Alan graciously let us re-published many of his columns regarding the man-made climate change hoax on this blog. He often said that we were making him famous down-under. After one republished column, he wrote:
I can barely read the news out of Australia whose leaders are taking your nation in the most disastrous directions, typical of the liberal distaste for reality on a range of issues.
Keep up your efforts. Eventually the message will reach enough people to turn things around. The effort continues here in the US. Cheers,  Alan C.
I know that  "Eventually the message will reach enough people to turn things around," yet I am sad that Alan did not live to see it.  However, as Judi McLeod, wrote in an obituary for the Canadian Free Press:
Some people leave behind legacies that go on forever after their life on Earth.  These are the ones far too lively for an ordinary obituary.
Patriot, writer and veteran of the United States Army,  Alan Caruba is one of those rare souls who soldier on in the human heart long after they’re gone.
Keep up your efforts, Alan C.

    The Pope and the Poor.

The World awaits as Pope Francis and his advisers draw up their official Vatican statement on climate change and the environment – expected out this week.

Meanwhile Time reports that  Italian Magazine  L’Espresso leaked Pope Francis’ hotly anticipated encyclical on climate change on its website on Monday, breaking an embargo on the document set for Thursday. (link)
The 192-page document is Pope Francis’ first major teaching letter on climate change and its effects on the planet’s poor. Hailed by some as the “pope of the poor,” Francis’ linkage of environmental and economic issues puts the Vatican out front on a closely watched topic.
    Shrill Alarmist SBS reports:
Pope calls for action on climate change in                       draft encyclical
Pope Francis makes an urgent call for protection of the planet and repeats his view that global warming is mostly man-made in his keenly awaited encyclical, according to a draft published by an Italian magazine on Monday.
As sources said before Monday's leak, the encyclical addresses the impact of climate change on the poorest nations and notes a broad scientific consensus that global warming is mostly caused by fossil fuels.
    The Impact on the Poor?

Fred Smith on Forbes addresses this: (Link)
The Pope is reportedly worried about how climate change might impact the poor, and he is quite right to be concerned. But it is the environmental proposals currently being championed as solutions, however, that are the real threat. The most frequently cited policies for allegedly “dealing with climate change” – like raising prices on fossil fuels and taxing carbon dioxide emissions – would actually cause harm to energy-starved and impoverished nations around the world.

    Advocatus Dei et Advocatus Diablo

The Catholic Church has a history of resolving complex risk situations. For example, to ensure that saints were properly selected, the Church ensured that both sides of the case were heard.
The Advocatus Dei made the case favouring that decision; the Advocatus Diablo – “Devil’s Advocate” – made the opposing case. One hopes that in addressing the morality of energy restrictions, both sides will be heard. The Vatican has heard the case for conventional environmental policies, having recently hosted a conference on this topic. Have they heard the opposing view?
To this humble blogger's simple mind, surely the church followers should believe that their God is in control of the weather/climate. A Google search of their Bible finds many references, eg:
'While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night shall not cease' (Gen 8.22).
"When He imparted weight to the wind And meted out the waters by measure, When He set a limit for the rain And a course for the thunderbolt, Then He saw it and declared it; He established it and also searched it out. (Job 28:25-27)

Then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. (Leviticus 26:4)
Many more references on "God Bible Climate Weather" from Dr Google, however, if they believe in their God, why do they go outside their reference book to believe the pseudo-science of the Shrill?

And, if the Pope is interested in the poor nations, they will be severely affected by the AGW hoax.

As Fred Smith on Forbes continues:

The world’s poorest people already spend a disproportionate amount of their income on energy. Increasing prices would block the shift in poorer nations from “biomass” fuels like dried animal dung to much healthier alternatives like propane and natural gas.
Increasing energy costs will slow the process of replacing backbreaking human labor with mechanical devices, as occurred over the past century in now-wealthy Western countries. The next stage of industrialization and prosperity will be blocked, as the factories and processes that the United States and Europe used to grow their economies in the 19th and 20th centuries will no longer be affordable—or possibly even allowed under international law.
The impact on individuals and families in poor countries will also be enormous. When a key economic input like fossil fuel energy artificially increases in price, virtually everything becomes more expensive. For the 1.2 billion people living on less than $1 a day, making everything they need to survive even marginally more expensive would be catastrophic.

    Fred's Final Feeling

None of this is to say that potential threats from future climate change should simply be ignored. If the world’s leaders—from heads of state to spiritual leaders like Pope Francis—want to help make the world a safer place, they should champion policies that improve society’s ability to cope with disasters, environmental and otherwise, and avoid those that hamper economic growth and innovation.
A wealthier world is a healthier world, and it’s the people at the bottom of the economic ladder who will benefit most from rising global prosperity. People of good faith have innumerable ways to help our fellow humans flourish and protect themselves from harm. Forcing them into perpetual energy poverty is not one of them. I hope Pope Francis will agree.
