The two agencies released a joint announcement this morning, following a careful collaborative effort in which experts closely compared analyses. Last year, NASA and NOAA also collaborated on an analysis of 2013, which wasn't as warm but still ranks within the top 10 hottest years on record.
The agencies' joint presentation shows that despite some differences, overall NASA's and NOAA's temperature records are overwhelmingly similar.....The 2014 record was not a blowout -- statistically speaking, the year surpassed the next runners-up by only a few hundredths of a degree Centigrade, averaged across the globe. (bold added)This is ludicrous! This is definitely unscientific. How can a science agency, using massaged data, seriously issue a report that one year is hotter than another by just 0.02ºC. What about the error bars?
Make that 0.02±0.1ºC.
That is just a nonsense and governments should be calling NASA:GISS and NOAA to "Please Explain!"
As astrophysicist Dr David Whitehouse of the Global Warming Policy Foundation (GWPF) says: (link)
In reality of course it is no record at all as the error of the measurements is about +/- 0.1 deg C showing Nasa:Giss’ statement to go against the normal treatment of observational data and its errors. Talk of a record is therefore scientifically and statistically meaningless.Judith Curry, of Climate etc writes: (link)
Meanwhile, the ‘warmest year’ is noticeably missing in the satellite data sets of lower atmospheric temperatures. Roy Spencer reports that 2014 was third warmest year since 1979, but just barely........Berkeley Earth (link-pdf) sums it up well with this statement:
That is, of course, an indication that the Earth’s average temperature for the last decade has changed very little. When will popular press start asking a few questions of the "scientists" pushing the man-made global warming fraud?
