All Scientists are Sceptics ~Professor Bob Carter

Whenever someone asserts that a scientific question is “settled,” they tell me immediately that they don’t understand the first thing about science. Science is never settled. Dr David Deming

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the science of climate change is the lack of any real substance in attempts to justify the hypothesis ~Professor Stewart Franks

Environment Minister Greg Hunt Confused over Climate Change?

The Australian's Graham Lloyd reporting today:

Confusion over Axed Climate Change Talks

Confusion was ever thus.

As the recent book "Taxing Air" by Carter et al recalled (re 2007):
John Howard saw the votes to be gained in crossing over to the warming camp, and Kevin Rudd promised to save the planet from the greatest moral, economic and spiritual threat of our time. (see Spooner's cartoon from Taxing Air.)
Just this week, John Howard said in his address to the Global Warming Policy Foundation:
John Howard accused some scientists of having a “nakedly political agenda” in their advice on global warming and said that attempts were being made to intimidate politicians by telling them to “follow the science”.
Surely he was pursuing a "nakedly political agenda" in crossing over to the warming camp. His address this week was not made in the pursuit of votes.
An overriding feature of the debate is the constant attempt to intimidate policy makers, in some cases successfully, with the mantras of “follow the science” and “the science is truly settled”.The purpose is to create the impression that there is really no room for argument; this is not really a public policy issue; it is one on which the experts have spoken, and we would all be quite daft to do other than follow the prescriptions, it is asserted, which flow automatically from the scientific findings.
Writing recently in Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, Dr Richard S. Lindzen, Emeritus Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said of those with political agendas who found it useful to employ science, “This immediately involves a distortion of science at a very basic level: namely science becomes a source of authority rather than a mode of inquiry. The real utility of science stems from the latter; the political utility stems from the former.”  (bold added)
THE Coalition yesterday abruptly cancelled scheduled climate-change briefings with business, lobby groups and diplomats from other nations, raising doubts about the position Australia would take to international talks starting in Poland next week.
Australia's stance at the annual Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change gathering was due to be considered by federal cabinet on Monday but the decision to call off briefings has been interpreted by some groups as a sign of division within the Abbott government.
Division within the Abbott Government? Or confusion from the Environment Minister Greg Hunt?

On Wednesday April 27th, 2011, Galileo Movement's Malcolm Roberts and NCTCS' Gordon Alderson presented Greg Hunt with fundamental scientifically measured real-world empirical evidence and logical reasoning proving that human production of CO2 did not and cannot cause catastrophic global ATMOSPHERIC warming.  (Link)

Malcolm:
Meeting you and watching you open up during our discussion I sensed you care about
people. It seems you genuinely care about the environment. Thus I wonder why you
persist, without evidence of causation, in your belief that global warming was caused by
human CO2 production. By adhering to this belief contradicting science and by
condoning clear corruption of science, I ask: what needs are you meeting?

You are aware of climate corruption, fraud, lies and misrepresentations

Further, during our meeting I presented you with extensive, detailed, documented
evidence of the corruption, fraud*, lies** and misrepresentations that are the basis of the
government-Greens alliance pushing dishonest, false and unscientific claims about
human CO2 production. You sincerely described the presentation by me and by Gordon
Alderson as “the best” and “one of the best presentations” you’d ever received. (bold added)
At the end of Graham Lloyd's piece:
The World Meterological (sic) Organisation last night released its annual report on atmospheric carbon dioxide levels which it said showed a continuing upward trend. The 2012 average concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide was 393.1 parts per million. The figure briefly passed through 400 ppm at one northern hemisphere observatory early this year.
Pep Canadell, of the global carbon project at CSIRO, said the figures proved current efforts were not enough to stabilise the climate system.
Here is a challenge to Pep Canadell. Please explain the instability of the climate system. This century atmospheric carbon dioxide levels continue their upward trend. Meanwhile there is a complete lack of any causality link between man-made CO2 emissions and catastrophic global warming. In fact there has been no significant warming this century. 1. Is Greg Hunt Confused? Not in my estimation. Just smart.
The key strategy instruction in "The Art of War" is “To win a war have someone else fight it for you; never engage in it yourself.” John Howard's speech in London is a classic in political strategy.
Howard is Tony Abbott’s emissary in the war on Corruption of Climate Science. Howard has exited politics (but not really) and hence become an untouchable, gave the speech. But who’s speech? Abbott will deny he knew what John Howard was about to say in London. That’s another “Art of War” instruction.
It’s worth recording the fuller context of Tony Abbott’s oft-quoted words in a friendly meeting at Beaufort in December 2009: "The argument is absolute crap. However, the politics of this are tough for us. Eighty per cent of people believe climate change is a real and present danger." Labor rarely include last two sentences when quoting the Prime Minister.
Abbott knew that it would have been political suicide to come out with a broadside on corruption of climate science in December 2009. Politics is the art of the possible.
Consider whether Greg Hunt is confused or as smart as?
His father was a very astute politician. Hunt is a Fulbright Scholar. He had a stint as Director of Strategy at the World Economic Forum in Geneva (2000-01). He is extraordinarily personable. He is also very strategic. He can cast aside Malcolm Roberts’ calling him to account for lack of political courage and integrity because main stream media have been captured by the “… absolute crap in the climate science argument”. They could never stomach humble pie by admitting that they have been duped by IPCC (UN) power seekers, left wing political operatives and corrupted grant-seeking so-called scientists.
Thank goodness for the wisdom of Australian voters. They gave the Coalition a huge mandate to get this economy-destroying climate change nonsense out of the Australian landscape.
Hunt’s job is to ramp up getting rid of the carbon Tax. At the same time he needs to find a way to rid the Abbott government of its commitment to Direct Action. His excuse has to be “It wasn’t me … someone else won the Direct Action war for us.”
It might be a Royal Commission; it might be a Labor-inspired Double Dissolution; it might be a surprise result in a re-run of the Senate Election for Western Australia.
Once Direct Action has gone balancing the books will be so much easier for Joe Hockey.
Meanwhile Labor’s political oblivion will be a very long hard slog for who knows how many Leaders of the Opposition.
But if the coalition revisits Malcolm Turnbull’s position we will be going around and around the garden again and the coalition will have learnt nothing.
