The Courier Mail reports on "
Queensland's biggest lemon."
Long after its expensive water
slowed to a trickle, the Gold Coast desalination plant is still leaving
taxpayers with a bitter aftertaste. The $1.2 billion desalination plant,
all but mothballed since 2010, is now the centre of a
multimillion-dollar lawsuit after insurance giant Lloyds of London
refused to provide cover for major defects.
Plant operators and builders have launched Supreme Court action against Lloyds seeking payment of up to $8.2 million.
The lawsuit is the latest chapter in the sorry history of the plant, which was meant to be the showpiece of the previous government's $9 billion water grid designed to "drought-proof" Queensland.
